The National Writing Project is the most successful, longest-running professional development network in the United States. For thirty years, the NWP has partnered with universities to offer Invitational Summer Institutes and to build cadres of master teachers who, in turn, assist others to grow as writers and teachers of writing. The lead agency of the NWP is anchored at the University of California-Berkeley and distributes an annual multi-million federal grant to 185 sites in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. On an annual basis, each university sponsor matches the federal allocation, a commitment to funding that is central to the network's growth and influence. Since 2000, the National Writing Project at Rutgers University has offered varied programming to New Jersey teachers.
