Inservice Partnerships

Greetings! Thank you for your interest in the National Writing Project at Rutgers University. We are one of over 200 sites that comprise the NWP network. For over thirty years, National Writing Project affiliates have sought to improve the quality of writing and teaching in K-college classrooms, and since 2000, the National Writing Project at Rutgers has supported New Jersey educators from all grade levels and content areas. Our inservice programming is based on the following key features:

  • A partnership model
  • Varied levels of inservice support
  • A reliance on teacher leaders
  • A problem-based approach

In light of research that suggests the limited effect of one-shot professional development visits, the NWP at Rutgers collaborates with schools to develop multi-year partnerships and to design a sequence of support services that meet the individual needs of the partner district. This programming may include the following services: an annual inservice series composed of half and/or full-day workshops; study groups; a two-week summer Open Institute; and an off-campus graduate course. Our inservice programming relies on our Teacher Consultants, practicing New Jersey teachers and experienced inservice providers who offer research based practices that have led to writing improvement in their own classrooms. All of our Teacher Consultants have participated in our Invitational Summer Institute and have designed best practice workshops grounded in current research. Our Teacher Consultants have presented in small and large conference venues and are committed to providing colleagues with specific instructional strategies that work.
